Fewer students enrolled in St. James Parish’s only school district in 2021-22 school year

The only school district in St. James Parish suffered declining enrollment in the 2021-22 school year, according to the Louisiana Department of Education.

There were 3,479 students in the halls of St. James Parish School District schools, 3.2% lower than the year before.

Enrollment in St. James Parish was steady compared to the state’s trend of decreasing enrollment.

Out of all the students welcomed in the 2021-22 school year, 50.8% of them were boys, and 49.2% were girls.

Data also showed that most of the students were Black or African American, representing 59.8% of the St. James Parish School Districts total enrollment.

St. James Parish School District has a main office in Lutcher and is the only school district within St. James Parish.

The majority of Louisiana students were either white (48%) or Black (37%) in the 2021-22 school year.

Only 22% of Louisiana’s teachers are Black or Latino, compared to about 48% of the state's K–12 students who identify as either race.
